In 1988 The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club asked a local GP’s practice if they would provide some emergency medical cover for their practices and matches. Our Medical Director, Dr Joe Baker duly obliged as a private venture, and over the years further polo and sporting venues were added.
The doctor in the meantime became the Medical Director of Medical Rescue International, (MRI) a company specialising in providing occupational health advice and repatriation assistance to the maritime industry. Much travelling and administration meant that he could not look after the events side as well, so MRI took this on and created a sister company, MRI Events Ltd, to carry out this work.
From our initial narrow base of providing medical cover to polo clubs, we have branched out to provide medical personnel, backed by emergency vehicles, for all types of sporting events at clubs, stadia and educational institutions.
In the equine world we have over the years supported cross country events, show jumping, pony club, point to point and, of course, the polo.
Motor rallies, and moto cross, rugby, football, both “English” and “American”, all field games, marathons and charitable contests.
We are presently supporting the sports programmes of six schools in the Southeast counties of the UK, and find that this is a rapidly expanding area of work.
